Do you like cheese? Well have a seat and I’ll serve you a plate full. With a title like LUNATICS: A LOVE STORY, how can you fail to be nothing but dairy product? So this movie is a cult classic, who doesn’t secretly love those kinds of flicks? Its just that this one might be a bit odder than most. Reminding one of an acid trip more than a movie with a plot, it takes the viewer on a strange journey into the life of Ted Raimi, who plays Hank Stone, a writer who has locked himself in his apartment for fear of evil doctors, spiders, and other hallucinations.Feeling a bit lonely, Hank dials a party line. Accidentally, maybe because he uses too much lube when he is alone, he dials the pay phone just below his apartment and asks Nancy, played by Deborah Foreman, to come up and join him. She isn’t on the up and up either. Plagued by her own naive personality and a heavy oversized leather jacket, she just lost her boyfriend, and is being chased by a gang. Funny, whenever that happens to me, I end up answering a ringing pay phone and go to the address the person on the other line tells me to. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
Fully taken back by Hank’s decor, Nancy digs to find out what his problem is. Hell, I’d be touched if a man took the time to decorate his own place. Who cares if he did it with tin foil. That just means he is thrifty. As the evening wears on, Nancy leaves, fully comprehending what a wacko Hank is. Well it is either Hanks place, or the mean streets of L.A. where the gang you pissed off by wearing their jacket is gonna’ kill you. What was their name again? Oh yeah the T-Birds.
Will Hank follow his fair maiden and recapture her heart. It is possible he will do so literally since his delusions have him close to becoming a serial killer. Have no fear. He is fully protected with the wallpaper from his room that he fashioned into armor. Hank ends up fighting fierce rap singers, spiders, and crazy doctors that rival Dr. Vannacutt from HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and act more like Orin Scrivello in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
Can you say the day is finally saved when Hank gets his woman, and battles his fears? With two psychos, a pant load of emotional drama and baggage, and a touch of humor, I’m afraid, the bumper stickers are correct. . . The only salvation you’ll find is with Christ.
