So I’m watching Juno and enjoying the heck out of it when this actress comes on in a bit part as a receptionist and I say, “Hey, I know her from somewhere. That’s Sue from Da Vinci’s Inquest! (actress Emily Perkins) Hey, wait a minute! She’s from Vancouver! Which is in Canada!” So then I’m REALLY suspicious and find out the director’s from Canada and so is the lead actress AND the lead actor.
So what’s the big deal? The big deal is that this is our one yearly designated “Little Miss Sunshine indie film that’s allowed to show in the regular theatres” and it’s CANADIAN! And they don’t even have the juevos to SAY it’s Canadian. Instead, they pretend it takes place in Minnesota or someplace, but it’s clearly Vancouver, okay?
Still don’t get it? This is a government-sponsored Canadian film disguised as a US “indie” and believe me, I plan on filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization. And have you noticed the Academy Awards have jumped in to perpetuate this fraud? With their “Foreign LANGUAGE film” category rather than the more truthful “Foreign FILM” category? Which means you can shoot your film anywhere and as long as it’s in English, it’s not “foreign” (like Juno). Or for that matter, shoot in the good old USA in German or Dutch or Urdu or (gasp) Spanish, and suddenly you’re “foreign,” even if you shot entirely in South Tucson or East LA with a totally US-born cast!
Other than that, I loved Juno and would highly recommend it.
