Very rarely does a PG-13 formula flick offer anything these days outside an upset stomach.  Predictable, diluted, cutely saccharine; these kinds of flicks are reserved for those adolescent couples who are too busy trying their hardest to hold hands in the theater instead of channeling interest in what’s being shown on screen. Director Roger Kumble, of Cruel Intentions (part deux as well) and College Road Trip fame, knows a thing or two about said odious formula.  Yet somehow, a charming little satire of his called Just Friends actually hits a decent mark.  It’s a silly movie, but it’s a funny one.  One with a heartbeat (even if arrhythmic); and that makes it somewhat of a winner!

I really kind of hate myself for liking a Jenny McCarthy movie.

A coworker loaned me a copy of this movie and I was reluctant to watch. As soon as the dreaded words Jenny McCarthy were uttered, I squished up my nose and thought, ‘No effing way.’ She’s the annoying large-breasted cackling blonde gal who bebopped and shimmied and screamed her way into my life on that horrible, horrible MTV dating show from so long ago. If you are over 30, you what I’m saying: Singled Out. It sucked of the highest magnitude. The male host, Johnny O’Toolbox, was equally annoying but in a general douchebaggy way and less in the noted McCarthy obnoxiousness.

Every one needs that one feel good movie to turn to when everything else seems hopeless. Well folks, heres your movie. Now don’t judge this book by its cover. Sure it has Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray in it and looks to be like any other cheesy Disney movie. But look closer and you will see that the bafoons who usually cast these shows finally got that stick out from up their bums and also casted the comically brilliant Jennifer Coolidge (more commonly known as ‘Stiffler’s Mom’) and Regina King.

No surprise here, this movie rocks your face off. If you have a problem with that, if you don’t like your face being rocked right off of your head, then just don’t go.

Step Up works just like porn. Get from one dance scene to the other with as little complicated a plot as possible and everyone can have a good time. Plus, the characters of Step Up 2: The Streets are all wearing just around the same amount of clothes as they would in Step Up 2: The Porn.

This movie had so many things going against it when I first popped the tape into the VCR, that it couldn’t be any good. The first of these problems was exactly that: I had to pop a tape into a VCR. I had not used a VCR in so long, that when I did, it felt old and clumsy. A bad omen for the prospects of this film. There were other reasons why I had to hate it. One, my two year old nephew was scribbling on my notes for a significant part of the movie. Two, watching this movie meant that there was two hours of time where I couldn’t feed my relentless online gambling addiction. Three, I was being forced to watch this film against my will. A few months earlier, I had made my brother-in-law watch a movie and managed to successfully dodge his reprisal thus far. Now he was returning the favor. The guilt trip lasted three days until I eventually gave in.

Zach Braff is a mystery to me. Not so much the person, but his success really. Or should I say fortune? You can’t say he’s good looking can you? (Ladies back me up here). It’s not like he’s just another slab of eye candy that stars in pictures as way to attract ticket sales from young girls, is he? I mean, the guy looks like the mutant love child of Ray Romano and David Brenner, does he not?!? Can you honestly distinguish talent in Braff when he merely plays a wacky TV character in a market saturated with shows filled you guessed it…wacky TV characters? (But do I own Garden State? Never mind!)

These movies truly move a person to cry and to laugh, to show a man his true potential, be it good or bad. These movies stay with us long after they end. Then there are the really bad movies: Vanilla Sky and the White Chicks. These movies are hard to watch and it’s a wonder how these piles of trash ever got made. Between these two generalized categories lies a subset of movie that is paradoxically both. The really great, bad movies: Enter Roadhouse.

Let me give you some insight into how the title of this movie was chosen.

Marketing Guy#1: So, we’re thinking a movie called “Blood” will really get the male demographic interested.
Marketing Guy#2: Wait, what about the chicks? Girls don’t like blood.
Marketing Guy#1: What do girls like? Flowers? Backrubs?
Marketing Guy#2: Hmmm… “Blood and Foot Massages.”
Marketing Guy#1: No wait, I got it. “Blood and Chocolate.”
Marketing Guy#2: Yeah!

Also as usual, they start by looking at what they already own and can squeeze more money© out of. So they look again at the Disneyland^TM rides: Pirates^TM, Haunted House^TM, Mr. Toad^TM, etc., and somebody eventually says, “What about Cinderella^TM©? We haven’t trotted her out in awhile.” “And New York^TM–we own New York City^TM now, don’t forget.” So they come up with a story putting Cinderella^TM© in Times Square^TM.
