It had been awhile since I last watched Robert Rodriguez’s camping trip to the cheese factory; his unabashed b-movie homage The Faculty, released in 1998. It’s a pretty bad but watchable flick about a deadly alien specie overtaking a Texas high school. Zeke (Hartnett), a smart but two-time senior spearheads a counterattack with a band of misfits who fell their foreign foes by jacking them with doses of home made meth. Featured in the flick though, is a roster of would be stars and entertainment personalities, albeit some more luminescent than others. Now that we’re ten years removed; let’s take a look back shall we?!?

When my cousin told me the premise behind Idiocracy, I nodded in approval. Why have I never heard of this movie? When I watched the old trailer for this movie on YouTube, I laughed, and again, I questioned myself: How could I have no recollection of having ever heard or seen anything about this film. Mike Judge’s (director of Office Space) comical answer to George Orwell’s 1984, tells of a horrifying, yet not altogether implausible, vision of humanity.

Watching The X from Outer Space, whose original Japanese title is Uchû daikaijû Girara, is like watching your son’s first magic show. When he was seven. He swirled his wand around and abracadabra-ed while a white dove wing peeked out of his sleeve and the rabbit periodically escaped from the hat before its cue. Your heart overflowed with love and joy because his charm and sincerity overrode his skill limited by age, lack of coordination and practice.

Next is an action movie with a twist. Cris Johnson (Cage) can see two minutes in to the future and uses his powers to protect his new girlfriend Liz (Biel) and evade FBI agent Callie (Moore) from capturing him in order to stop a nuke from going off on American soil.

First of all, Cris has a bad haircut, it’s ugly as hell. Second, Cris, for some odd reason, can see more than two minutes in to the future when he’s with Liz which makes no sense at all because when Liz is kidnapped by terrorists Cris still sees more than two minutes ahead. Third, at one point the FBI tells Liz that Cris is a psychopath and a liar but she doesn’t believe them and tells Cris of their plan and he escapes. I don’t know about you, but if the FBI told me that the dude I just picked up and barely know is a psychopath I’d damn well believe them.

A great marketing tagline for “Jumper” could have been: Jumper: It’s “Highlander” for the myspace generation! Both feature leaps through space (and logic), centuries-old rivalries, and an acting vacuum for a lead (Christopher Lambert in ‘Highlander,’ Hayden Christensen in ‘Jumper’), and both are a laughable assault on the intellect (but ‘Jumper” lacks that groovin’ Queen soundtrack).
Jumper may also be notable for no other reason than Samuel L. Jackson managed to wear a more bizarre wig than his Gumby model he sported for “Unbreakable” a few years back.

Teenage Zombies is magically inept. Only something as insubstantial as magic could keep one watching long after the realization that there will be no thrills, no chills, and because much of the film is set in a subterranean lab, only bargain-basement suspense. It’s also this paring down of expectations, an almost documentary realism - this can’t be “the movies,” only “real life” is this shoddy. The sci-fi element, as it emerges, becomes reassuring - the menace of old-fashioned communism producing a race of slaves as conjured up by a wicked vamp, a Dr. Myra (Katherine Victor), who seems to have accessed not the x-files of the FBI but the closet of Marlene Dietrich. She’s creating zombies while wearing cocktail dresses. Looking back from 2008, or even from 1988, Teenage Zombies may be exactly how we’ve “always” pictured the American 1950s - this waiting around for Elvis Presley or James Dean (or Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello) to show “them” (these teenage zombies) the way forward. The teenagers in Teenage Zombies don’t need Dr. Myra: they already were zombies (and archetypes of lost innocence/idiocy we can instantly feel affectionate towards and superior to).

I’ve performed a series of complex calculations and have determined that Nicolas Cage can only make one good movie per decade. The 80s gave us Raising Arizona and a bunch of other dreck. The 90s gave us an Oscar winning performance in Leaving Los Vegas and then an amazing amount of filmic retardation. Unfortunately for this decade, we’ve already had 2002’s Adaptation, so there’s nowhere to go but down. This statement seems to apply to his hairstyles as well.
